I agree, although some will say that longer contract protect the club more, I personally think 4 year deals are fine and should encourage players to put in the work for a new deal.

I would imagine the reason why Carroll was on a 6 year deal is because the club amortise his fee across that time, and possibly the transfer fee may have been partially paid out across the length of his deal. Tight-arse thinking once again.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
I wonder if there's a need for such long contracts. Certainly Carroll's 6-year deal has been a huge problem, and our contracts for veterans have broadly all been too long. But every Summer players will want a new deal anyway if they're playing well enough to claim one, and if they aren't then maybe the club doesn't want the longer deal they originally committed to.

To me the logic is for shorter contracts but with more frequent re-evaluations. Maybe two or three year deals but players will expect to sign a new deal each Summer if they progress. I think that would work great for the club as long as bonuses and agent payments weren't excessive.

The club have done a lot wrong, but in this case they have handled his contract situation just fine. it's just a shame that he seems to have gone off the boil and that they didn't have a crystal ball like many of our fans seem to....

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
No it suggests that the club rewarded his first season form, breaking into the team, with a decent deal, but with scope for further negotiation should his form continue and he follow up his breakthrough season with further proof that he could be an established PL player. Quite often you see players on long term deals happy to take the money and not put the effort in quite so much, because they know they have no scope to earn a new deal, see Andy Carroll.

The length of the deal only really matters when a player is down to his final two season, which Antonio was not in neither case so your point makes little sense.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
Long contracts don’t fend off interest, they mean that despite interest you can either keep the player or demand the highest premium for his signature. That’s why new contracts should be given, to protect the interests of the club. As I’ve already said, I’ve got no problem with him being given a new contract after his first year, that should have been 5 years, it’s the one a year after that that suggests a poorly run club.

"The club is poorly run, arguing otherwise is akin to arguing that rain doesn't fall from the sky."

Where am I saying that? Is it not possible for me to have the opinion that the club have done the right thing in this instance with Antonio whilst at the same time knowing that overall the club is run poorly? You don't seem to be good at accepting other people have opinions that might both agree and disagree with yours.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
Why do you think that Antonio's contract hasn't benefited the club? Had he been a proven premiership player when we signed him his contract would have reflected that. he wasn't, and was on fairly low wages compared to most. he did well, was given a decent payrise. He followed that up by performing well yet again, winning HOTY, being called up to the England squad etc. This all benefits the club in many ways, and rightly so he was rewarded with a new deal.

I'm not sure why you are obsessed with long contracts, the deals Antonio were given weren't about the length, it was about rewarding him for improvement. I'm also not sure why you believe long contracts fend of interest, they don't. making sure a player is happy and rewarded does.

We gave AC a long contract, that didn't work out very well.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
Are you determined not to read what I'm posting? Players should be given new contracts for the benefit of the club, and players should sign the contract they thibk benefits them.

Lanzini should get a long contract because it benefits us. He's been excellent since he came here. Lanzini for his part will probably only sign a long contract if it is big enough.

None of which is relevant to Antonio who was given 3 new contracts in 3 years. As I say, the second one I don't disagree with, that should have been ling enough for the club not to have had to give him one the following year.

The club is poorly run, arguing otherwise is akin to arguing that rain doesn't fall from the sky.

So people shouldn't be rewarded for doing well? It'll be fun to see how long we can hold onto Lanzini without giving him a pay rise.

regarding Carroll, you seemed to be suggesting that a well run club should put players on long contracts to fend off interest. Was that not your point?

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
“and again was rightly rewarded with another new deaL”

I don’t agree. Giving someone a big fat contract every year because they did what you were paying for when you gave them the big fat contract the previous year is not a sensible way to run a club.

As for Andy Carroll, unless we gave him 3 new contracts in 3 years I’m not sure what your point is?

Winston Reid getting 70 bags a week for six years, plus whatever loyalty bonus. Absolutely nicking a living, that bloke.

you mean like the SIX year deal we gave to big andy?

A well run club may have taken top whack from Chelsea for a player who has had a good season and half in 10 years of being a pro?

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?

He was signed on a 4 year deal I think, on fairly low wages compared to the rest of the squad. he broke into the team, did very well, became important for us, and was rightly rewarded with a new deal, a years extension to 2020 and a pay rise. A year later he won hammer of the year and was our stand out player, albeit in a poor season, and again was rightly rewarded with another new deal, and another extension to 2021. Whenever a player is given a new contract it is extended, it's not about him being on a longer term deal to fend off interest, it was about paying him was he deserved to be paid.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
I think there’s something wrong with giving him 3 new contracts in 3 years. The second one maybe fair enough, but a well-run club would have made sure that was long-term which negates any supposed Chelsea interest only 1 year into it.

Re: West Ham player salaries revealed?
FYI the club gave Antonio a new contract after his first season, nowhere near the amount mentioned above. He was then given another deal after his second season, when he had just been voted our player of the year, and Chelsea were supposedly sniffing around. He is also supposedly on 55k, with the rest made up of bonuses.

I fail to see what's quite so wrong with that?
